Drift Strategy
For my walking approach was algorithmic walking. I took the the first left then the third right then the first right and repeat. I did this and saw and heard somethings I have never seen or heard before. I did this pattern until I ended up where I began. For all my recordings my mics were attached to my shoulders. I decided to keep the footsteps in my sound clips because my strategy was to be constantly walking. I did have to stop to cross busy streets and stuff but for the most part I was always walking.
Sound 1: WaterBus- Listen Here.
I was walking down Maryland just after turning off of Belleview and I saw a water fountain to my left. I decided to veer off the path just by 20 feet to get the water sound to be more strong. I like when I walk away from the fountain the water sounds seems to cross fade into traffic that was passing by on Maryland, though there was no effect there. I then faded it out while the bus was driving away. This sound was recorded on 9/20/08 at approximately 2:10 pm.
Sound 2: Kick the Can/Bus Breaks- Listen Here.
I like this recording because there are multiple sounds in it. After walking for awhile with nothing but standard traffic noise and slight wind I came across a can in the middle of the sidewalk, being bored from the repetitive traffic I decided to kick the can with some interesting results, since the can still had some liquid in it. After kicking the can a more variety of noises came about. The bus air breaks were really close so those came out really well. Then there is a truck turning over and peeling off. With all my sound recordings I try to have the fade out go with traffic noise which was fading off in the distance to make it sound more flowing. This sound was recorded on 9/20/08 at approximately 2:35 pm.
Sound 3: Sounds from the Heavens- Listen Here.
This is probably my favorite sound because it was unexpected. My only regret is the wind. I had to cut the fade out a little bit short because wind started blowing really hard at the end of the piece. I stood there for awhile and this is the best consistent sound of the church choir. Again this sound is my favorite because it seemed to come out of nowhere and it is quite a beautiful sound. This sound was recorded on 9/20/08 at approximately 2:43 pm.
Sound 4: Kickin' the Can to Sweet Child of Mine- Listen Here
Again this is a good sound piece in my opinion because there is multiple sound sources. Again I was finding myself bored with standard traffic noise when I ran into more litter on the sidewalk. I kicked the can again and it was kind of full like the last one. Then a guy comes driving by pumping some Guns & Roses "Sweet Child of Mine". At this point I knew I was going to have a good sound bite. Then the noises kept coming with some barks of a dog at the end of the clip. This sound was recorded on 9/20/08 at approximately 3:10 pm.
Sound 5-0 Listen Here
My final sound was used as a last resort. The rest of my sound walk didn't feature anything to exciting other than standard traffic. So I used the small bit in which a cop car, that was next to me when I was waiting to cross the street, turned on its sirens and took a right and sped away into the distance. It kind of took me off guard because I turned to look at it and once I looked away the sirens popped on. I did try to match the fading away of the sirens with the fading away of the actual recording. This sound was recorded on 9/20/08 at approximately 2:15 pm.
